Can uterine fibroids cause infertility?
Uterine fibroids, usually known as "fibroids", are benign tumors of the smooth muscle present in the uterus. They may vary in size and location and, depending on their characteristics, they may or may not be symptomatic. The main symptoms can be: heavy periods, intermenstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, constipation or a feeling of hypogastric weight. If their location affects the uterine cavity, fibroids can lead to difficulties of the embryo implantation, as well as an increased risk of miscarriage. The presence of large or multiple fibroids may affect uterine and endometrial vascularization. In some situations, medical or surgical treatment to reduce the size of fibroids is possible.
